Alex Woollard

Consultant Plastic Surgeon BM, BSc, PhD, FRCS(plast)


Mr Woollard has an NHS practice based in the Royal Free London NHS Trust and at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. He has a sub-specialist focus in complex microsurgical reconstruction, nerve regeneration, and facial reanimation. He is the lead plastic surgeon at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore where he provides soft tissue reconstruction for complex revision arthroplasty, sarcoma and spinal surgery and the London Spinal Cord Injury Service.

Privately Mr Woollard is the plastic surgeon for the Cleveland Clinic London, echoing the complex reconstructive practice he has within the NHS. The Cleveland Clinic have recently opened a brand new hospital at 33 Grosvenor Place, and outpatient facilities at 24 Portland Place and 55 Moorgate. Mr Woollard has clinics at all locations providing a complete plastic surgery service, both reconstructive and aesthetic.

He is a founding partner of “Relimb” with Mr Norbert Kang. Relimb offers a complete reconstruction service for amputees including osseo-integration (OI), Targeted Muscle Rein-nervation (TMR) and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI). Relimb has an international collaboration with Prof. Munjed Al-Muderis and The Osseointegration Group of Australia (OGAP) and the Relimb team has travelled to Baghdad, Iraq as the plastic surgery contribution to the OGAP humanitarian mission there.

After leaving St Paul’s School he studied medicine at Southampton University (BM) and History of Medicine (BSc) at the Wellcome Institute and University College London. He then returned to London for basic surgical training, specialist registrar training in plastic surgery, and finally a microsurgical fellowship at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, home of the fabled Guinea Pig Club. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2015 and entered the Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery the following year. He has been a consultant at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust since 2016.

Mr Woollard has extensive experience in clinical research. His PhD research in nerve regeneration was completed under Professor JW Lichtman at the Centre for Brain Science in Harvard University. He has been awarded a Research Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons (2011) and the MRC (2003). He has received multiple prizes including the Patton-Masser from BAPRAS and the Stephan and Anna Galeski fellowship from the RCS, as well as grants from the Anton Jurgens and Roan Trusts. He is an Honary Lecturer at University College London and continues to have an active role in research focused on nerve and muscle regeneration including TMR and RPNI. He presents work at both national and international levels.

Mr Woollard is an active member of the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons(BAPRAS), the British Aesthetic Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and the European Association of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgeons (EURAPS) He has been certified by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in both cosmetic surgery and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. He is chair of the Cosmetic Practice Standards Authority (CPSA) and a trustee of the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practice (JCCP). He is a specialist advisor for both the MHRA and NICE. He has worked with the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication to help develop tools for plastic surgeons to better communicate and consent their patients for surgery.
